‘SOS’ is designated as the worldwide standard distress signal: ’··· --- ···’ in Morse code. The reality of life on Cape Cod merits the urgency. The Cape We Shape’s Team SOS is needed to respond to the emergency we’re facing.
By protecting our priority natural resource lands, we also safeguard clean water, species at risk, and the natural beauty that sustains our economy and makes life on the Cape possible.

How We Protect What We Love-and What Remains
The Cape is saved piece by piece: through land, voice, and action.
Permanent land protection happens in several ways on the Cape, and while the mechanisms may sound technical, the idea behind them is simple: Keep vital natural lands intact forever. That can happen through ownership by non-profit land trusts*, perpetual conservation restrictions (CRs), or public acquisition by towns for perpetual protection. Each tool protects land in a different way, but all of them work toward the same goal: safeguarding the systems we depend on.
Here's what most people don't realize: These decisions aren't made in a vacuum. They respond to the public voice. Town boards, land trusts, and state agencies make choices based on community pressure, priorities, and participation. That's where Team SOS comes in. Each of us plays a part in shaping what gets protected-and what doesn't.
*Land trusts are private, non-profit land conservation organizations that work with landowners to acquire land or conservation restrictions for permanent conservation.
